UG Conveyor Installations - MG Civil Installation

The site engineers at Glencore’s Oaky No. 1 underground coal mine have requested the assistance of Orana Engineering to determine the extent of the civil work required to effectively utilise the drive-head equipment in newly mined chambers for conveyor installations for MG32, 33, 33C, 34, 35 & 36.

On completion of the chamber mining, the finished surfaces (e.g. rib and floor) may need to be modified to accommodate the installation of the conveyor drive-head equipment.  The civil design must determine the concrete grades for appropriate area drainage, adequate and safe access, concrete reinforcing for particular conveyor equipment, while simultaneously minimising the trimming and concrete required.

Orana Engineering was provided with “As-Cut” survey data to assist with completing the civil design.  By manipulating the survey data using AutoCAD software, Orana Engineering design staff are able to accurately determine where equipment could be practically installed with minimal trimming and concrete works.  The civil design had to work within the required installation parameters and meet the client’s constructability requirements.  From this design, Orana Engineering produced a drawing set that detailed out the civil aspects of the conveyor design, including chamber trimming, equipment mounting locations, the configuration of reinforcing and the relative levels of the concrete.

By considering the mechanical layout for both development and longwall conveyor requirements during the civil design, the likelihood of rework and delays during installation is significantly reduced.  For a relatively minor cost, the conveyor installation can be completed efficiently and with minimal site trial and error.
